Here are five tips from HGTV and other sources to help preserve your carved pumpkin:
1. Clean with a Bleach Solution: After carving, soak your pumpkin in a solution of one tablespoon of bleach per quart of water. This will kill bacteria and help slow down the rotting process. Be sure to dry the pumpkin completely afterward.
2. Apply Petroleum Jelly: To keep the carved edges from drying out and shriveling, rub petroleum jelly on them. This seals in moisture and prevents the pumpkin from decaying too quickly. Alternatively, you can use olive or coconut oil for a more natural option
3. Use a Cool, Shaded Spot: Keep your pumpkin out of direct sunlight, as heat speeds up decomposition. A cool, shaded area, such as a covered porch, will help your pumpkin last longer
4. Hydrate While Carving: If you’re working on an intricate design that takes time, keep the pumpkin moist by spraying it with water as you carve. This prevents it from drying out during the process
5. Use Battery-Operated Lights: Instead of using real candles, opt for battery-operated LED lights to illuminate your pumpkin. Open flames can dry out the pumpkin and increase the chance of it rotting
These tips will help keep your pumpkin fresh and festive throughout the Halloween season!
