DRIFT

Thinkspace Projects in Los Angeles is hosting “Storybook,” a solo exhibition by Portuguese artist Nuno Viegas, from April 5 to April 26, 2025. This exhibition marks Viegas’s latest exploration into the intersection of graffiti culture and fine art, showcasing his distinctive approach to urban contemporary art.

Nuno Viegas: Bridging Graffiti and Fine Art

Born in Faro in 1985 and raised in Quarteira, Portugal, Nuno Viegas, also known as Metis, began his artistic journey with graffiti in 1999. He founded the art collective Policromia Crew, emphasizing collaboration among street artists. After completing his studies in Visual Arts at the University of Algarve, Viegas moved to Rotterdam in 2014, where he discovered a new artistic identity that blends the raw energy of graffiti with the precision of fine art. His work presents a contrast between the aggressive reality of traditional graffiti and a peaceful, clean representation, paying tribute to those dedicated to the graffiti scene.

“Storybook”: A Visual Narrative

“Storybook” reflects Viegas’s ongoing dialogue with graffiti culture, translating its elements into refined visual narratives. The exhibition features a series of works that delve into the symbolism and aesthetics of the graffiti subculture, reimagined through Viegas’s meticulous technique. His paintings often depict objects associated with graffiti—such as gloves, masks, and spray cans—rendered with a hyper-realistic approach that elevates these everyday items into iconic symbols. This method not only honors the graffiti community but also invites viewers to reconsider the artistic value inherent in street art practices.
