The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame has officially announced its Class of 2025, headlined by NBA luminaries Carmelo Anthony and Dwight Howard, along with WNBA legends Sue Bird, Maya Moore, and Sylvia Fowles. The enshrinement ceremony is scheduled for September 5–6, 2025, at the Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, Connecticut, and the Hall of Fame in Springfield, Massachusetts. 

Carmelo Anthony: A Prolific Scorer’s Journey

Carmelo Anthony’s basketball odyssey began with a stellar freshman year at Syracuse University, leading the Orange to their first NCAA championship in 2003. His exceptional performance earned him the NCAA Final Four Most Outstanding Player award.  Selected third overall in the 2003 NBA Draft by the Denver Nuggets, Anthony’s 19-season NBA career included ten All-Star selections, six All-NBA team honors, and a scoring title in the 2012-13 season. Internationally, he secured three Olympic gold medals with Team USA.  Reflecting on his Hall of Fame induction, Anthony expressed profound gratitude, stating, “This is the greatest accomplishment that I ever will accomplish.” 

Dwight Howard: Defensive Dominance and Championship Success

Dwight Howard, drafted first overall by the Orlando Magic in 2004, established himself as a defensive powerhouse. His accolades include eight All-Star selections, eight All-NBA team honors, and three consecutive Defensive Player of the Year awards from 2009 to 2011. Howard led the NBA in rebounds five times and blocks twice. He played a pivotal role in leading the Magic to the NBA Finals in 2009 and later won a championship with the Los Angeles Lakers in 2020.  Upon learning of his Hall of Fame selection, Howard remarked, “This is such an amazing honor… This is like what you dream for.” 

Sue Bird: A Trailblazing Career in Women’s Basketball

Sue Bird’s illustrious career spans over two decades, primarily with the Seattle Storm, where she became the WNBA’s all-time leader in wins, games played, assists, and minutes. Her achievements include four WNBA championships, 13 All-Star selections, and five Olympic gold medals with Team USA. Bird’s influence extends beyond statistics; she is celebrated for her leadership and impress on the game. On her Hall of Fame induction, Bird described the experience as “surreal,” emphasizing the honor’s magnitude. 

Maya Moore and Sylvia Fowles: Champions On and Off the Court

Maya Moore and Sylvia Fowles, both integral to the Minnesota Lynx’s success, have left indelible marks on women’s basketball. Moore’s career includes four WNBA championships, an MVP award, and two Olympic gold medals. She retired early to focus on criminal justice reform, highlighting her commitment to societal change.  Fowles, the WNBA’s all-time leading rebounder, boasts two WNBA titles, multiple Defensive Player of the Year awards, and four Olympic gold medals. Reflecting on her career and Hall of Fame recognition, Fowles stated, “You just do your job… and when it’s all said and done, the job is complete and here we are.” 

2008 U.S. Olympic Men’s Basketball Team: The Redeem Team

The 2008 U.S. Olympic Men’s Basketball Team, famously known as the “Redeem Team,” is also being enshrined. This squad, featuring stars like Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, and Chris Paul, reclaimed Olympic gold in Beijing, restoring USA Basketball’s dominance on the international stage. Their selection underscores the team’s significance in basketball history. 

Additional Inductees: Billy Donovan, Micky Arison, and Danny Crawford

The Class of 2025 also honors Chicago Bulls coach Billy Donovan, recognized for his back-to-back NCAA championships with the University of Florida; Miami Heat managing general partner Micky Arison, who oversaw three NBA titles; and veteran NBA referee Danny Crawford, celebrated for officiating 23 consecutive NBA Finals. 

Enshrinement Ceremony Details

The enshrinement festivities will commence on September 5, 2025, at the Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, Connecticut, followed by the official ceremony on September 6 at the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Massachusetts. This event promises to be a momentous occasion, celebrating the achievements and contributions of these basketball luminaries.
