In February 2023, writer Akiva Goldsman, who penned the original film, confirmed that the project was progressing, with Warner Bros. entering a multi-year first-look deal with his production company, Weed Road. By December 2023, Will Smith revealed that a new script draft had been completed and that discussions with Michael B. Jordan were ongoing. He stated, “I have a call with Michael B. Jordan tomorrow. We’re really close; the script just came in.”
In June 2024, Michael B. Jordan provided an update, mentioning that they were still refining the script and expressing enthusiasm about collaborating with Smith. He noted, “We’re still working on the script and getting that up to par… I’m really excited to get in front of the camera with him.”
