On October 31, 2024, HBO unveiled the first images from its upcoming series, IT: Welcome to Derry, a prequel to Stephen King’s IT. Set in the early 1960s, the series delves into the dark history of Derry, Maine, exploring the origins of the malevolent entity known as Pennywise.

A Glimpse into Derry’s Past

The released images offer a haunting look into Derry’s troubled past. One notable photograph features a group of young individuals riding bicycles through the town, evoking a sense of innocence overshadowed by impending doom. Another image showcases the Black Spot, a nightclub significant in Derry’s history, hinting at the racial tensions and tragedies that have plagued the town. 

Exploring the Black Spot Incident

The Black Spot fire, a pivotal event in King’s novel, is expected to be a central storyline in the series. This tragedy, resulting from a racially motivated arson attack, claimed numerous lives and left a lasting scar on the community. By bringing this event to the screen, IT: Welcome to Derry aims to shed light on the town’s deep-seated issues and the malevolent force that exploits them. 

The Return of Pennywise

While the initial images focus on the town and its inhabitants, the presence of Pennywise looms large. Bill Skarsgård reprises his role as the sinister clown, promising to delve deeper into the character’s origins and the terror he inflicts upon Derry. The series aims to explore the cyclical nature of fear and how it perpetuates the entity’s reign of terror. 

Creative Vision and Direction

Developed by Andy Muschietti, Barbara Muschietti, and Jason Fuchs, the series seeks to expand upon the universe established in the IT films. Andy Muschietti, who directed the previous IT movies, returns to helm four of the nine episodes, ensuring continuity in tone and style. The creative team aims to honor King’s original work while offering fresh perspectives on the town’s haunted history.
