“BMF” is a track by American singer-songwriter SZA, featured on “Lana,” the deluxe edition of her second studio album, “SOS.” Released on December 20, 2024, “BMF” has garnered significant attention and acclaim.

Background and Release

Following the success of “SOS” in December 2022, SZA hinted at a deluxe edition. In August 2023, she revealed that this project had evolved into “Lana,” comprising new songs and previously unreleased tracks. “BMF,” initially known as “Boy from South Detroit,” was among these anticipated outtakes. Although early reports suggested a collaboration with Lizzo, the final release features SZA as a solo artist.

Musical Composition and Themes

“BMF” is a bossa nova-inspired song that interpolates the 1960s classic “The Girl from Ipanema,” incorporating its melody into the hook. The lyrics reference “the boy from South Detroit,” echoing Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin’.” SZA also mentions Slauson Avenue in Los Angeles, potentially paying homage to the late rapper Nipsey Hussle.

Reception and Streaming Performance

Upon release, “BMF” quickly gained popularity. By December 29, 2024, it became SZA’s 30th song to enter Spotify’s Global Top 40.  As of January 3, 2025, the track has amassed over 24 million streams on Spotify, making it the most streamed song on “Lana,” surpassing “30 For 30.”

Chart Performance

“BMF” has achieved notable chart success, reaching a new peak at #26 on global Spotify charts as of December 26, 2024, with 2.51 million streams.
